The night is well underway in Europe, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a webOS update. As it would turn out, mere weeks after hitting Palm Pre and Pixi phones in the United States and Canada, Pre owners on O2 in Europe can now pull down their latest webOS updated in the form of webOS 1.3.5.2. What’s different about this version from webOS 1.3.5.1 in the United States is currently an unknown, we’re waiting for the changelog to land right now. In the meantime, welcome to the land of space for apps, Europe!
UPDATE: We have a changelog after the break for you, but what’s important may not be in there. According to German-language tech site Heise Mobil, Palm has baked and enabled bluetooth tethering into webOS 1.3.5.2. Users in our forum have tested this out and wonder of wonders, it works.

Howard Stern, take note: Lotus Notes synchronization has come to the Palm Pre, courtesy of CommonTime’s newly updated mNotes Wireless. The update to mNotes brings over-the-air Lotus Notes sync to webOS, as well as the iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, and S60. Lotus Notes support the Pre through mNotes is handled through Microsoft Exchange syncing; essentially mNotes is transforms Lotus Notes into an Exchange account.
The latest version of mNotes and the mSuite for Palm Pre is available as a free trial from the CommonTime website, extended use comes to the tune of $140/year.
Thanks to muchtall for the tip!

It should come as no surprise that web usage from Palm devices is up, as the Pre us a much more competent web device than older Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices. The surprise, however, is that web use from Palm owners in the US was up in September from August by 22%. The numbers come from a monthly report by AdMob, which shows that Palm’s share of mobile internet traffic jumped from 4.1% in August to 5.0% in September, even while global smartphone traffic dropped approximately 3%. Worldwide, Palm’s share of mobile traffic increased from 1.9% to 2.4%.
The biggest draw of mobile web traffic remains the iPhone OS (iPhone and iPod Touch), accounting for 28.1% of US traffic, though that is a drop of 5% share from August. September’s biggest gains came from HTC, with the manufacturer gaining 1.9% more of the mobile web market and the #3 spot in top handsets with the Dream (otherwise known as the G1 on T-Mobile) at 5.5%. The Pre is placed 5th with 4.1% of US traffic, and increase 24% over August.

Nachdem der Palm ausgepackt und eingerichtet ist, habe ich einmal die grundlegenden Telefonfunktionen getestet.

Agile Mobile recently unveiled a preview of an app they’re working on: Agile Messenger for Palm Pre. While the fact that messaging apps are on the way for the Pre is no surprise, the feature list that Agile claims for their app is surprising. We’re talking push-to-talk walkie talkie functionality, voice messages, and video messaging. And Agile Messenger is to support Google Talk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ chat.
There are three options that we can think of to explain this delicious oddness:
- Agile is making stuff up or confused about the current capabilities of webOS. Not likely.
- Agile has invested big time in their own programming to build the framework for audio and video recording and messaging. Also not likely.
- Agile has been working closely with Palm and the new features in Agile Messenger will be enabled by a coming updated to webOS and the Mojo SDK. More likely than the above.
We have no idea when Agile Messenger for Palm Pre will land, as all Agile is saying is “soon.” Currently Agile Mobile has released messaging applications iPhone, S60, J2ME, and Windows Mobile. Looking at these other apps, we can now throw some cooling water on the fiery embers of anticipation: Agile lists the exact same feature set with the exact same wording for all versions of its software.
Will Palm bring video recording and a microphone-enabled SDK to support Agile messenger’s promise capabilities? Yes, eventually, but we wouldn’t be too optimistic that it’s going to be “soon.” Though we would love to be proven wrong. Nudge nudge, wink wink.
Thanks to Azthel for the tip!
